Getting Started for Students
Students: Get Involved in SRTS Activities
Getting interested and involved in how you and other students at your school get to school is a great way to get involved in an issue that affects your life directly. Getting involved in Safe Routes to School can help you develop leadership skills and become more engaged with your community. Youth support for Safe Routes to School policies, programs, and planning can be a powerful force in creating change. Making your voice heard can let school and district decision-makers know that healthy, active transportation is important to you.
Are you a student who is passionate about active transportation, walking and biking to school?
Here are some ways you, too, can get involved:
- Start a bike club at your school and organize rides
- Volunteer to help organize Walk and Bike to School Day events at your school
- Lead a walking school bus or bike train
- Write a letter to your principal, school administrator, or local elected official encouraging them to support Safe Routes to School activities and initiatives
- Middle- or high-school youth can conduct a participatory research project, conduct a walk audit or develop a photovoice (a collection of photos taken by students to document conditions)
- Youth mechanics can staff bicycle maintenance shops or pop-ups to support community needs or get a bike mechanics class in the school
